Are you considering medical abortion as you face an unplanned pregnancy? You may be overwhelmed by so many questions and emotions right now. Take a moment to breathe and consider all your options and the risks that come with abortion.
What is Medical Abortion?
Also called the abortion pill, medical abortion includes taking two different drugs that work to terminate an existing pregnancy.
A medical abortion is FDA-approved through ten weeks of pregnancy. Mifepristone is taken first and blocks progesterone. Then, misoprostol is taken, which causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.
Some of the common side effects women may experience include headache, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, fever, and chills. Possible risks of medical abortion include:
- Infection
- Fever
- Incomplete abortion (which may require surgical treatment)
- An ongoing pregnancy (if the drugs don’t work)
- Digestive discomfort
Before Making Your Decision
It’s important to protect your health by confirming your pregnancy before making such a major medical decision. Begin with a free and confidential pregnancy test at Pregnancy Care Center, and one of our Client Advocates can explain the correct way to take the test and discuss your results with you.
Once you have confirmed your pregnancy with a pregnancy test, you may qualify for a free ultrasound at our center to get even more information.
Ultrasounds are important to confirm important details of pregnancy, including how far along you are, the location of the pregnancy, and viability (if there’s a heartbeat and the pregnancy is progressing).
