Why Do You Want to Hide Your Pregnancy?

Sharing the news and talking with people you can trust about your pregnancy is vital. We’re here for you.

Are you ashamed of or embarrassed by your pregnancy? If so, we understand. An unplanned pregnancy is a shock. You may worry about how your parents, partner, or friends react to the news.

Are you afraid someone will harm you because you are pregnant? Research indicates that abuse often increases when a partner discovers a pregnancy. Don’t live in fear.

If someone is abusive, we encourage you to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-SAFE (7233) for 24/7 support. Or, contact us by calling or texting our 24/7 Helpline.

Is Abortion an Option?

You should never make a decision based on fear or shame. No one has the right to pressure you into choosing one option over another.

Many factors determine if abortion is an option for you. If you are early in your pregnancy, you may be considering the abortion pill method. Be aware that the drugs used in this type of abortion have certain risks.

The Mayo Clinic lists the following risks of these drugs:

  • The body doesn’t release all of the pregnancy tissue. This is also called an incomplete abortion and may require a surgical follow-up procedure.
  • An ongoing pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work. The FDA approves the use of the abortion drugs through 10 weeks of pregnancy only. The further along you are, the less effective the drugs are.
  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Digestive symptoms such as an upset stomach

Have You Confirmed Your Pregnancy?

Believe it or not, a positive pregnancy test and a late period may not be enough to determine if you are actually pregnant. Experts estimate that as many as 26% of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage.

It’s possible to get a positive pregnancy test days or weeks following a miscarriage because it takes your body time to return to pre-pregnancy hormone levels.
