Finding out you’re pregnant when you weren’t expecting it can bring a wave of questions you don’t know how to answer yet. If parenting doesn’t feel like something you can take on right now, adoption is one option that women choose as a thoughtful way to plan for their child’s future.

Adoption today looks very different from the outdated picture many women have in mind. As the birth mother, you have a voice in the process and can make decisions about the kind of adoption plan you want. You don’t have to figure that out alone.

At Pregnancy Care Center, our client advocates will walk you through all your options in a confidential setting at no cost.

Adoption Looks Different Than You Might Expect

A lot of what people think about adoption comes from old stories or outdated assumptions. Today, adoption gives you more say in how the process unfolds. You can decide what feels right for you and what kind of plan you want for your child’s future.

There isn’t one “right way” to do adoption, and you don’t have to decide anything right away. Taking time to understand your options is often the best place to start.

The Three Types of Adoption Plans

Open Adoption

In an open adoption, you maintain some level of ongoing contact with the adoptive family and, over time, with your child. This may include exchanging letters and photos, occasional phone calls, or in-person visits.

For many women, staying connected in some way can bring reassurance and a continued sense of involvement. If that kind of relationship feels important to you, open adoption may be worth exploring.

Semi-Open Adoption

A semi-open adoption offers a middle option. Communication still takes place, but it’s typically shared through a third party, such as an agency.

This setup can allow for updates and a continued sense of connection, while still keeping direct personal details private for everyone involved.

Closed Adoption

In a closed adoption, there is no ongoing contact or exchange of identifying information after placement.

For some women, this structure can offer clear boundaries and privacy moving forward.

No one option is the right fit for each woman. What matters is understanding what each path involves and choosing what feels right for your needs.

Cost Shouldn’t Be a Barrier

In most cases, adoption services are provided at no cost to birth mothers, and pregnancy-related medical expenses are often covered as part of the adoption process.

Depending on the situation, additional support may also be available during pregnancy, such as help with housing, food, or clothing.

Start By Confirming Your Pregnancy

Before making any decisions, it helps to start with clear medical information about your pregnancy.

If your pregnancy test is positive at our center, a client advocate can let you know if you may qualify for a no-cost ultrasound. That scan can provide information about how far along the pregnancy is, whether the pregnancy is in the uterus, or whether the pregnancy is progressing by detecting a heartbeat.

Having those details can help you better understand your health and consider your next steps.

You Don’t Have to Figure This Out Alone

Not feeling ready to parent doesn’t mean you’re out of options. It means you’re in a moment that calls for accurate information and real support. We are here to answer your questions, give you space to think, and walk alongside you without pressure.
